One of the nice things about riding a motorcycle is that the systems are dirt-simple, compared to modern cars. Personally, I have no hesitation diving into the most complicated of electrical projects, but when it comes to the mechanics of my vehicles, I'm not so confident. With my cars that's not such a big deal, an oil change at the local quick-lube doesn't cost much more than the price of the oil & filter so I'm happy not being bothered with it.
Motorcycle maintenance is a different matter. Where my 500-cubic-inch V8 in my truck can have an oil change professionally done for under $30.00, the 1,100cc twin on my bike will cost over $75, and I have to drive an hour to the dealership! There is a lot of incentive to take care of the basic maintenance on the bike myself. The next step is knowing what to do, and how to do it.
If you ride a Harley, there is a great tool you can use to gain this knowledge - the Fix My Hog DVD series.
