I have
always had a love/hate relationship with my tank bags. I love the
convenience of having gloves, a CD player, a bottle of water, a flashlight,
and a map within handy reach without dismounting from the bike. But, I
hate the flimsy mounting systems, the scratched paint, and the pain in the @rse
of unfastening the bag to refuel and trying to get it back in place when I'm
done.
Tank bags are like the weather... Everyone complains, but no one does
anything about it! Well, for tank bags at least, someone finally has.
Enter "Big Mak".
Big Mak is a BMW rider up in Oregon, and he has built a better tank bag.
I've been riding with mine since shortly after I got my new bike in 2000,
but it took me over a year to strike a
deal with Mak to get the AirBags on CycleGadgets.com. My wife Laurene
and I ride a BMW R1100RT, and as you would expect, it's pretty well loaded with
gadgets. People ask about the lights, the GPS, the satellite radio, and many
other items... but I'll bet that 50% of the questions I get are about the
Big Mak AirBag. Everyone is impressed by the high quality, great
looks, and downright convenience of this bag.
The secret behind the AirBag is the exclusive "Tank Rack", made
exclusively for the motorcycles listed below. The Tank Rack mounts
securely to the bike by replacing some of the screws around the fuel filler
with longer screws and spacers. The rack has a hinged "platen" that
slips into a pocket on any of the AirBags, and swings forward out of the way
for easy refueling.
Since no part of the bag or rack touches the paint on your motorcycle,
there is no scratching. The rack is very sturdy, and the bag can be
slid on or off the platen in less time than it takes to read this sentence.
The flip-up design works so well, that I just pull up, slide my credit card
at the pump, fuel up, and leave... I never get off the bike!
Most people would be satisfied to design a tank bag with so many obvious
advantages, and stop there. Not Big Mak, though... there are three
different bag designs to choose from each in several different sizes, and a whole laundry list of available
accessories. For multiple-bike households, you can also get extra tank
racks to move one AirBag between bikes. Begin by choosing the model of
bike you want to fit from the list below. Each page shows the
bags that will work on that bike and the available accessories.
