Red - Switched power (can use the fuse box or the parking lamp in the headlight bucket)
Orange - to Turn Signal Cancel wire. This is brown with a white stripe. The K1200RS/GT does not make this very easy. If you remove the fuel tank, the wiring will be easier to access, but it can be done without pulling the tank. Pull the fan shroud off of the right cooling fan and locate the wire bundles behind it. In one of the bundles, you'll find a Brown wire with a White stripe. Use a good flashlight with a white beam; non-halogen flashlight bulbs are yellow and you'll have a hard time distinguishing the Brown/White from Brown/Yellow. Tap the Orange Autoswitch wire into the Brown/White wire and replace the fan shroud.
Note - If you have the AS-4NB-CG pre-wired version of the Autoswitch, you will have a plug on the Black and Violet wires that plug into our wiring harness. Just plug it into the harness and skip the remainder of these instructions.
Black - Ground (2nd black wire can be clipped off; it’s not needed)
Violet - to coil on auxiliary light relay
There are two types of Autoswitch - the BMW turn-signal cancel models AS-5NCY and AS-5N2, and the High Beam models AS-5P and AS-5P2.
BMW Models:The BMW models of the Autoswitch (AS-5NCY and AS-5N2) will work on non-CanBUS BMW motorcycles that have three separate buttons for left, right, and cancel. Bikes that will not work include F650's and Airhead R-bikes (these bikes have a single left-right-cancel control in one switch), and the newer CanBUS models including R1200GS, R1200RT, R1200ST, K1200R, K1200S, and most likely any model released after these bikes.
The BMW models are activated by pressing the turn-signal cancel button to activate or deactivate your auxiliary lights. With the AS-5NCY, a press of about 1 second will turn the lights on or off. With the AS-5N2, pressing the button twice within 3 seconds activates or deactivates the lights. If you have two sets of auxiliary lights on your BMW, you can even install both an AS-5NCY and an AS-5N2, each controlling one set of lights.
High Beam Models: The AS-5N and AS-5N2 models will work on just about any bike, including all BMW's (even CanBUS, F650, etc. that won't work with the BMW-specific models of the Autoswitch).
To activate the High Beam model, you will "Pulse" or "Flash" your high beam in a particular pattern. The AS-5N looks for a pulse between 0.8 and 1.8 seconds in length - anything shorter or longer than that window is ignored. The AS-5P2 looks for two quick pulses within a 3-second period. You can even install both an AS-5P and an AS-5P2 on the same bike, each controlling a different set of auxiliary lights.
All versions of the Autoswitch include a status LED that indicates if the Autoswitch is activated, and in the case of the AS-5P the LED will flicker during the 0.8 to 1.8 second "window" so that you know when you can release the high beam to activate the auxiliary lights.
